I'm not working this year so will have heaps of time at home and apart from growing the vegetables and getting more fruit stuff in I am thinking of challenging myself to do/learn different things.
Some things that I have thought of so far:
*Make soap using the fat from the pig we kill. I have made it with oil but this way will utilize more of the animal that we eat.
*Do a half day bushwalk.
*Catch, cook, clean a marron by myself so I can feed myself if I need to.
*Make paper and envelopes and write to a few people using that homemade paper.
*Eat only what we grow/produce here, for a minimum of two days.
If I try one thing a month I need at least 12 things so that I can do/learn something different each month. More ideas will give me a choice. Or a chance to do more...
I'm looking for ideas. Bearing in mind that I'm not very fit or strong. Or brave...and I will have no money...
Does anyone have any ideas please?
What challenges will you set for yourself this year?

Do you know how to make an oil light/lamp without a lamp?
ReplyDeleteYou can make cheese and yogurt, right?
Can you make your own sewn articles?
Tried solar cooking?
You can give up tp? This is for yourself, not husband or family.
Can you make a trap of your own with your husband's help while you have the other trap at your house?
Learn to bake bread or another kind of bread when it gets cooler for you?
Do you dehydrate or can?
Plant one more edible plant than you usually plant.
All of a sudden, I cannot remember one thing you have ever done...lol. Okay, I remember hens, eggs, foxes, snakes, mice, carrots and tomatoes. and your husband and children.
A couple of things there that I have added to the list Linda. Thanks.

This is a great idea Barb, I will get my thinking cap on and try to come up with some ideas! Some good ones suggested in Practical Parsimony's comment though :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Tania, looking forward to any ideas.

You will enjoy being a home and you will probably get really creative.
ReplyDeleteHomemade paper is a great idea and you can also give it as gifts and make cards out of it as well.
Cheese making is good, you can make simple cheeses very easily without much at all.
Try new recipes and preserves with your homegrown produce.
You will come up with ideas as you go along, also necessity is the mother of invention so as things happen you will come up with ideas and plans.
Some great ideas there. I've got a more specific suggestion - attend a geocaching event! There is one on next Sunday at Manjedal scout camp just south of Byford. You can also choose to camp overnight for a small fee. It seems those that are, are camping Saturday, and we hope to do so too.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could go too, if you are free?
Well that does sound good but... no can do. Was going to look for a geocache this morning but I forgot about an appointment. I really need to learn how to use our GPS thingy too.

You have some great ideas there. I like the idea of tackling one new thing a month. I'm struggling to think of suggestions because it depends very much on what you lile, use and eat. Me - two tasks I want to achieve in the near future: Have sprouts on the go on the kitrchen bench at all times and learn how to make cheese. Good luck and enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI know Tricia. It's hard to give ideas when you don't know the person asking. Sprouts are good to have on hand and cheesemaking is something I thought of but I have cut down on eating cheese.
DeleteGood luck with your cheese endevours.
