It's going to be a nice day here, cool but no rain, which is just as well seeing as tiff and I need to visit other daughter and I need to entertain 2 little kids, one that doesn't want much to do with me, for an hour or so. Without their mum so that will be fun! I plan on putting her in the pram and walking so if nothing else it will give me a decent walk to add to the Fitter By Friday blog. Multi tasking at it's best, if it works out right.

I haven't been doing much, Vinnies has been closed since the 24th March so I have been home most days for 6 weeks...and still have nothing to show for it. Husband has also been home and while he has done a bit outside and he has gardens up and stuff growing, me, not so much. Even the choko vines that always have heaps of fruit and lovely green vines this time of year are not doing much. I wonder why but not that interested in researching the reason.

Husband has had a few shifts of work since the Pandemic shut everything down, then when he could have had a few more days work he hurt his back so has been layed up for close on 4 weeks. He has been moving a bit over the last week and yesterday we went for a drive to see how the back was with sitting and driving. Seems OK so maybe he can get back to work next fortnight.

Our Vinnies may be able to open towards the end of June so myself and a few volunteers have the go ahead to go down to the shop and get donations sorted and the shop clean and organised. A massive job as even though we had signs up asking for NO donations we ended up with hundreds of bags that now need sorting through. We started last week and will go in for a few hours a couple of times a week over the next few weeks in the hope we can get the shop ready to reopen. And now my alarm has gone off and I haven't even done half of what I wanted to before we leave for Boyanup, better get a move on...The washing machine is beeping at me to hurry up...
Conned husband into coming with me and he wasn't that grumpy about it!
So I have been on 2 adventures this month, go me. haha, small things make me happy.

My first adventure this year was a solo drive up to Lane Poole. I like this place, it is only 20 minutes up the road, trees, water and peacefulness.
So why don't I go more often? "Cause I'm a sook that thinks I will get lost, get mugged, car will conk out, or yowies will eat me...

Anyway it was 2 Fridays ago when I finally did go, it was my wedding anniversary and husband had to go to work so I decided to go somewhere and celebrate anyway.

It now cost $15 per car to get into this park, a few years ago it was free, just pay if you camped there, but the last couple of years they have been doing a lot of work, clearing areas, putting in fancy camp kitchens and camp areas, making it so most areas have to be booked on-line, bulldozing down trees, so city people can come and camp in the bush!! It's nothing like what it used to be, not better that's for sure. But for a day trip, still nice. And there are still a couple of areas that you don't need to book so that's OK. And seeing as I have a Parks Pass that allows free entry to National Parks I may as well go as many times as I can. Anyway, I parked up at just after Nanga Mill and walked up to Stringers. Not far, a gentle stroll through the bush, up some steps, down the steps and up a small hill then back to the car. 35 minutes. Maybe. Damn, that was hard work! I am so unfit now it's ridiculous.

I was so hot when I got back to the car I had to have a paddle to cool down. That water was so cold! It was a lovely day out.

For today's adventure I talked husband into coming with me...he wasn't too grumpy about it either so yay! We weren't sure where we were going but I had read a blog about a place called Frog Hollow and it sounded pretty cool so that's where I picked for today's adventure.
After leaving here we drove past Gnomesville, didn't stop here today as we have been here a few times, Not too far to get to where we were going.

Frogs Hollow is a smaller version of Gnomesville, much smaller, but maybe one day it will rival it. Today though we had fun looking for all the different frogs, did we find them all? Probably not, but that's a reason to come back again.

Had a yummy hamburger from Preston Valley Store, the shop across the road, Kym had a milkshake, one of the nicer ones I've tasted over the last few months. Then a decision on which way to go and I chose South. To Grimwade. Drove through the bush looking for camping spots, found a few he says we may come back to...Then a quick visit to Kirip and home via Donnybrook. It was a great day out.

I wonder what my next adventure will be?
Or is it ever too late to wish everyone a great and happy year? I don't think so.

We are now nearly 2 months in and again, I am growing nothing. Well, a couple of capsicum plants but that's about it. This morning though while watering Husbands stuff I picked a pile of tomatoes and a a couple of capsicum. And 2 from my plants, better not forget that!

And while watering I was munching on figs. And a few boysenberries. And grapes. Watered the coffee trees and collected a bakers dozen plus 3 eggs from a secret nest I found under it so I will check to make sure they are OK then add them to a <strike>zucchini</strike>...marrow and make a quiche for tea.

I am dogsitting again. We had him for 10 days not long ago but this time he is only here for a couple of days. But it's a bit concerning having him here now as we have seen 2 snakes over the last week. One INSIDE the house. We called a snake catcher to come get that one as it went into a cupboard but she missed it!!. Says it went out through a hole in the wall so I hope so. Except, outside that wall is the cattery. Which, again, I have let the grass get too long in. But I am not game to get out there this week and work on getting it cleared up because husband isn't home and if I disturbed the snake and it bit me I would cry. And maybe die too if I don't get help quick enough. So the grass cutting in the cattery will wait a couple of days until husband gets home. Cat wont go out there while the dog is here so she's safe enough. Unless the snake comes back inside...HoHum, I really do need a massive declutter and cleanout. The snake we saw last week was a lot bigger that the inside one and I have no idea where that went to. So that is 3 unaccounted for over the last 6 months, 2 over the last week. I wonder if these are a grown up version of the babies that were around last year...I wonder how many are out there that we don't see...Though I do try not to think about that too much.

I have been busy with Vinnies, we are still short staffed so I am still going in extra days, I like it but thinking I need to start doing other things too. I want some adventures this year, been saying that for years! but this year the urge is stronger. Tears are still there when I think of going anywhere by myself but I'm old enough now to suck it up and just do it. 😃

I have a day off tomorrow and I should stay home and get some jobs done...but I may go for an adventure, just a small one...will decide tomorrow.

Have a great one people, have some fun.

Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-58900756272536336372019-10-11T08:40:00.000+08:002019-10-16T09:52:30.739+08:00I hate the grass. I love the grass.Over the last 2 months I have achieved...Nothing.

It is now Spring time and the gardens should all be cleared out and packed with stuff to eat...Or at the very least, ready to be planted with stuff to eat in the future...But no. While I did clear a bed or two the grass has just grown back. And that's my excuse you see. Grass, not normal easy to pull out weeds but grass that has roots all the way to some place deep in the dirt. And these are raised beds that were lined with inches of cardboard. But still, after years of being there the grass made a move in and I have never gotten on top of it hence the problem I have now. I don't like spraying poison, which I know will kill the grass that is there, so I need to spend more than the odd 20 minutes that I am now to actually work on them and get it removed. Then start again I suppose...

Husband has built some smaller beds in the chook pen, with netting to keep the chooks out but I haven't even started anything in them yet. While he did start and now has a massive amount of potatoes growing. It seems that he who does, gets.

We have cows out in the back paddock and they eat grass. So I like that the grass continues to be abundant out there for them, and the neighboughs let them go into their paddock so each area is rested while the grass grows back. But around the house, lots of grass, no matter the season it needs mowing all the time. Over and over and over and...well, you get the picture. So son bought a couple of sheep so I wouldn't have to mow everywhere, all the time. They have 4 areas that they are rotated to so I don't have to mow so many areas all the time. I mow the area when they are moved to a clean area and that short grass and sheep droppings are mowed and used on the gardens or in growing areas. So my area that needs mowing is way smaller than what it was a couple of years ago but still quite big. So I mow and feed the clipping to the chooks as free chookfood, or give it to the sheep or the cows if they are close. Mostly I just empty the catchers into the chook pens and let them deal with it in what ever manner they want, eating or scratching in it and spreading it around the pens. It eventually turns into dirt that I dig up and use in the gardens.

Grass is green, here it is green all year round without any watering from us. I like that. I like that everything always looks green and is cool during Summer. I like that we can go outside and feel grass under our feet.

Grass hides snakes. I don't like that snakes can slither around out there and I can't see where they go. This is quite a common occurrence because I always wait until the grass is too long before I get out there with the mower.

So though I don't like mowing all the time I like the grass and the many uses that it has. And in saying that, guess what a job for today is? Yep, I gotta get out there and mow that grass!Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-30123316429464395382019-08-14T07:56:00.000+08:002019-08-14T07:56:03.163+08:00What's Happening - 14th August 2019It's coming to the end of Winter here in Western Australia and it is raining again today, just like yesterday. But Monday, wow that was a beautiful sunny day. I was at work so couldn't make use of it though. And since it's going to be, is, very wet today I will go into work again. The plan was to do a hive inspection but wet and cold days are not the best time for that so it will have to happen another day.

Vegie gardens are all full of grass, I have nothing growing, couldn't feed my self even 1 meal from what is out there, very bad state of affairs...Hubby has put seeds in trays so he may get something going before me so I really do need to get out there and do something, clear at least one small area and make a start. Maybe I will... The Oranges are falling off the trees though so we need to keep on top of those. I am giving them away at the moment as there is only so many Oranges 1 person can eat

The bee hives haven't been looked at for a couple of months but were doing OK last time he looked. I haven't even been out there since the middle of Autumn. But since it will soon be spring we do need to get an inspection in soon and get a super put on each hive. I have found those and have them ready so that's something I suppose. Next warm day when I am home I need to empty the extraction shed out and give it a good clean ready for the first extraction but that shouldn't take too long.

I do plan to get all the gardens back up to scratch so we can feed ourselves again and may even take advantage of an offer from Growing Wilde to come and help with that. In the meantime I am busy with volunteering as we are so short of volunteers at the moment I am going in extra days, this should settle down soon and with the longer days I will have no excuse to not be doing something outside.

What's everyone else doing, how do you keep yourself busy?Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-29956379848122251962019-03-18T07:42:00.000+08:002019-04-25T07:49:23.663+08:00My 40 Things...I am doing a 40 day challenge to get rid of 40 things, 1 item a day for 40 days...Doesn't sound hard at all does it? It's harder than I thought it would be though so maybe writing down things that do go will help encourage me a bit more. We'll see.

1 - Box of stuff from sunroom.
2 - Another box of stuff from sunroom.
3 - 2 shirts in bin.
4 - 8 shirts, 1 skirt, pair of shorts to Vinnies.
5 - A manual muili/grater type thing to Vinnies.
6 - A mug that I broke the handle off of. I had it sitting on the bench for a week before I decided that I should take it out and put it in the bin!!
7 - 2 plastic cooldrink bottles that I was reusing for water.
8 - Big glass bowl.
9 - 3 old phones.
10 - Gingerbread house making kit
11 - Stick on corner shelf unit. This has been put out in shed so does it still count? hmmm.

25/04/19 Well the 40 days is well and truly over...I have gotten rid of way more than this piddly list of items but can't remember what they all were now. Shows that they were not wanted, needed or loved!

I do think that this was a great challenge though so big thanks to Sue for setting it, just sorry that I didn't follow through with it all the way because I really did intend to and it would have made a bit more of a difference in the house, shed and yard.

And now that we are seeing so many snakes that could get inside the house, be inside already?!!, I do need to keep up with this. Or is it better to have the crap there so I can't see the snakes...?

Where will I go? March.😄I have heaps to do this month, a main one will be trying to get my neck/back sorted. It's been painful for going on 4 weeks now and I have finally decided to go see a doctor about getting a scan to see what it is. The appointment with them is this morning. While I am there, if I remember, I will ask to get bloods done as well as it's been a few years since they were taken. When I think about it, I haven't been to a doctor for years, not sure how many but quite a few. I think. Anyway, I am popping Iboprovin like they are lollies and I don't like having to do that so doctor for some other ideas it is. I usually only need to take a couple of pills on a bad day with the fibro so for a person against pills it's not been good.

Get a massage, see if it helps my back. Done. Didn't.
See doctor to confirm muscular. Done. Is.
I need to clean out the chook sheds before Winter.
Oil chooks legs again, for Scaley Leg Mite.
Tidy sunroom. Done -ish
Make appointment for new glasses.
Haircut.
Clear out big tank garden.
Weed mulched area under Orange trees.
Replant Comfrey.
Decide on 2 places to go to and then go.

Well, look at that. I started writing this on the 3rd, so 2 weeks ago. Hmmm. I know I have been busy over those 2 weeks but not with much on that list!

I haven't been anywhere except for the Quambie Park fete which is held every year at the old peoples home here in town and I bought books I didn't need to add to my too many now collection. I really should add cull books to my list...

I am at work for probably 4 days this week so not much will be happening here but I have mowed twice in the last 2 weeks. Edges need doing and I can't do those so it still looks, and is, very messy and overgrown out there. Did help husband a little bit to get the wood into the woodshed from out the back paddock. Maybe shouldn't have as feeling neck and back now...Hohum.

I think I need less time on this thing and more time outside doing stuff. Should I add that to my list?!
Catholics know what Catholics do over this time but there are lots of non-Catholics that decide to give up stuff as a bit of a challenge during this time and I have become one of them.

Last Wednesday I was invited to join a small Facebook group where the aim is to de-clutter 40 things over the 40 days of Lent. I joined up and hope that with other people doing the same thing it will get me started on getting rid of things I no longer use, need or like. You'd think though that if I didn't use, need or like them then they wouldn't be here anyway wouldn't you but some peoples brain don't work like that and we need a bit more encouraging and support. This small group may be what I need to get me started. We will be aiming to declutter 40 things over the 40 days of Lent, post in the group to encourage and help others and to read and get the help and encouragement of those in return. I will also use this blog to record how I go as I know I always do better with things when I write about them here.

Today is the 6th day of this challenge. The first 2 days I did good by getting rid of 2 boxes of unwanted stuff that had been sitting out in the sunroom for months. Since those 2 boxes of stuff I have removed nothing. I am at Vinnies this morning so I have a bag ready and I now need to go find 6 things to take down there. I already have 2 things in the bag so I only need 4 more so not sure why it is so hard. But, on Saturday we went to a fete and I bought some books so I probably *should* get rid of a few books to make room for them. But books...I'll work on them another time. Off to grab some crap...Done! In the bag and ready to go.Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-27768248048109980942019-03-06T07:02:00.001+08:002019-03-06T07:02:26.606+08:00What have I done? Where have I been? March 6th.Well we did get an extraction in, back on the 6th Feb. It wasn't the greatest but enough for us and family with some to sell. I still need to finish putting the extraction shed back to how it should be...

I am still down at Vinnies 3 days a week plus extra days as we are short of volunteers for a few months.

It's been hot so I didn't do much of anything outside. Now I have done something to my neck/back so I'm not doing much of anything outside...

Husband and I went up to Boddington for a weekend in February. Not camping but it was nice to get away for a bit.

Over the last few months we have been picking bananas, grapes, a few apples, now peaches are falling off the tree and there will be more apples if I remember to get some bags over some branches so the parrots don't get the rest. Chooks are back to laying. Not much in the vegies gardens though. I did have a few lovely looking capsicum plants and we picked a few but the sheep got out and into them so HoHum...Husband did get some lovely onions from his patch and a bit of garlic that will be nice to eat but a bit small for replanting.

All the grass stayed green over Summer but we didn't mow often enough, as we do. Or don't. It needs doing again now but we are forecast 2 days with rain so that wont be happening.

I am still fat and unfit.

I didn't declutter enough. I didn't clean enough. I didn't achieve much of anything. Hopefully this month will be a bit better and more productive. Hmmm, we'll see.

What has everyone else been up to?
Husband has put extra supers on the hives so the bees have plenty of room and haven't swarmed but the boxes are full and really do need doing. It is something that we must do this month sometime. Definitely must do before the Redgum is ready.

Back in Spring daughter and I cleaned the extraction shed out, we karchered it all, painted the floor, washed everything so it was all clean and ready to go...But it never happened. My plan next week is to vacuum the extracting shed again, dust everything again, cover everything to keep the dust off and have it all ready for the day he says " We're extracting today, ready for it?" And I will smile and sweetly say "Of course Babe" It will take him maybe 5 minutes to put his hat and veil on, light the smoker and be ready. He will be out in the paddock with the trolley ready to start before I have even started. It will take me longer to finish what I was doing, find my suit and put it on, put my boots on, and my gloves, find my nerve and get out there to "help"

I can't do much out in the Apiary though. I can use the smoker...that's about it really. I am not strong enough to lift the boxes even though they are not full size supers only WSP's. I cringe and sook if too many bees get too close to me, and they do, there are a lot of bees in 4 hives and they don't always like having the roof of their house removed and rooms taken away. So really husband does it all out there and I am there just to put in an appearance because they are "my" hives and it is "my hobby".

Once we have the boxes of capped honey frames on the trolley and he pulls them across the paddock to the extracting shed then I can do a bit more. If I had to I could do it all once he gets the boxes into the shed but it would take me all day and there would be a big mess and I would probably be crying.

But one day soon we will do the much needed extraction. One day soon...

Before that though the whole apiary area needs another mowing as the grass is too long and snakes could be hiding...And this is one other thing that I am too sooky to do. Husband will get out there on the ride-on, in shorts and thin shirt, maybe his bee hat, and job done in half 20 minutes. It will take me longer than that just to suit up. So yeah, another job on his list. He did make a start a few weeks back but it's all grown back again and like all the grass around here really needs doing more often just to keep it reasonable.

Yeah, it's warm and today I did go swimming in the dam a couple of times so maybe it was hot.

We are a couple of k's out of town on 5 acres, with paddocks around instead of houses. We have grass that stays green without watering even during Summer and lots of trees so there is a lot of shade around and husband has put misters up in what we call our Shade Area and they work great to cool the air, it is noticeably cooler within minutes of turning them on. The birds really like it when we turn them on too and dozens of little birds come in and flitter around, it's really pretty good to see.

Inside we only have wall fans and we have those on when it's warm inside. Close the front curtains during the day and open them at night to let the breeze in. If it's too hot inside then we go out and sit in the shade area.

The chooks notice the heat so if we are home we put sprinklers on for them but even without that there are plenty of trees for shade in their yard and they have continuous waterers so they always have fresh water.

I don't like the heat though, I much prefer Winter, but with a bit of common sense, some forward planning by husband and the lovely area that we live in...we will survive, even with a few hot days.

I will take a few photos tomorrow to show why it is so cool here when lots are dealing with the heat.Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-51114391693189501612019-01-06T10:03:00.002+08:002019-01-06T10:21:07.029+08:00Curtains Up For Little Blue Wren.

The curtain I put up with so much effort yesterday blew down with last nights wind so little bird was back this morning.

I needed another plan...but what, what, what? I have cardboard boxes but wasn't sure how to make them stay in place as I cannot reach one corner to secure it there. The cattery is also in front of a section of this window and that makes it awkward for me to get to. Eventually I decided on a board that I was using for the kids to draw on as it was the correct width though way too long. I had to sit it on a sink outlet pipe and wedge it between the cattery and the wall but it looked like it would work. So, sorted. I win little bird! But, maybe not...

The wind blew and a gap formed and little blue wren came back. I was concerned that he would get stuck between the board and the window so had to go hunting for another solution. That was one of my boxes, not the best but will work for now and maybe husband will get home today. In 10 minutes he will have it sorted, no problem.Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-22049237634548753232019-01-05T09:02:00.002+08:002019-01-05T09:02:24.668+08:00Reflections...I was away from home most of yesterday and didn't get back until around 3:30/4:00 Did drop in for a bit to pick something up with T and she noticed a bird at the kitchen window, sitting outside and sometimes tapping the glass. We thought it was cool and that it was probably getting bugs from all the spider webs. Went out again and when I return home the bird is still there, still tapping the glass with it's beak.

It didn't seem too fussed about me getting close to the window and taking photos either.

After a bit I posted on a bird group and someone mentioned Blue Wrens being territorial and reflections...Of course! So I went outside and yep, reflections. He was thinking that there was another bird in his area.

Three hours later and it was still there!

The wire cage that you can see the corner of, that is our cat cage. The wren was flying in and out of that and sitting on the wire, not smart for a bird to enter a cat cage.

This morning he was back, tapping at the window with his beak. I knew I had to stop his reflection but wasn't sure how to. I hung a towel from the inside but that didn't work. What I needed was something on the outside but that was going to be a bit trickier. I tried throwing a towel over that rail that the cords are on but there was still too much glass so he still came back. In the end I knew I had to cover the whole pane of glass, but how?

I ended up hanging an old curtain up but I don't know how secure it is. Not very I think but it is doing it's job. My first attempt I didn't cover the whole window, missed a spot and he found it.

Oh and a heads up. If you are not as fit and agile as you once were...Put a block of some sort under the ladder leg so it doesn't wobble as much. Tie your shoe laces up before climbing the ladder. Don't rely on bendy shade cloth wire to support you.

I will ask husband to make it more secure when he gets home from work.

It's Friday the 4th January so we are 4 days into the new year. I woke up feeling good but then started feeling blah and teary for no reason and wondered why. Had some Magnesium as that usually helps but then I remembered today as something different. Thirty years ago today I was in a hospital so I missed daughter L's 1st birthday. Happy Birthday L. Sorry 'bout that.

I was put in hospital a week or 2 beforehand for what the doctors called "Chronic Clinical Depression" I only remember bits of the years leading up to it, husband says it's better that I don't remember things. He says things weren't good. I know it wasn't a good time for the kids...But I got better so today surprised me.

This time of year there are many people going through a hard time and some blame the Season. The being alone over Christmas and New Year period. They tell everyone that they are "depressed", maybe they are. Maybe they are just sad, lonely and afraid. This is different to true Depression

Depression is a bad thing, it mucks with your head and you become someone different. Sometimes someone not nice. There seems to be a lot of it around and sometimes I wonder why. What makes some people so sick that life becomes a chore and they want out? What makes us feel so bad that each day is an effort?

I know a few people that suffer from Depression and have been on medication and seeing counsellors for more than 20 years and I hear others talk of the same. Twenty years! I can not get my head around that. Twenty years and still not "better" Why would someone continue taking pills and doing the same thing for 20 years when it hasn't worked, when they still need medication and counselling? I truly don't get it.

A lot of these people drink and smoke and eat crap to relieve the stress and pain of their Depression, does this work for them? Maybe. Maybe they would be worse off if they didn't. Maybe.

I was talking to someone about this recently and they told me that I didn't understand. That I would never know what they had been through and so shouldn't try to give advice. I had told her she should stop filling her body with poisons and she might have a chance at getting better and she didn't like that. Said it wasn't that easy. But what if it was that easy? Give it a go and tell me in 3 months that you don't feel better. Don't tell me that I don't understand. Been there, done that.

And don't blame your childhood for how you are today. Some people have really crappy childhoods, some get hurt so bad..., some people have major losses to deal with... Of course it's going to mess with our head. Don't let it ruin your life though.

I believe that Depression can be fixed, that people can recover from it, that they can get better. If you suffer from this please don't take offence at anything I have written. I'm not saying it's your fault, I'm saying that if what you have been doing for the last 20 or how many years is not working then just try something different. It may be that simple.Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-17273875374743963532019-01-01T22:32:00.001+08:002019-01-01T22:32:23.877+08:00First Day Of The new Year.
First day of 2019 and I was up early, around 4:40 am. I love getting up early but prefer 5 - 5:30. Before 6am anyway. Half past 4 is a tad too early but anything after 6 and the morning slips away too quickly.

So I have a coffee, go on Facebook, read some blogs. Then outside for a look around, check the chooks, turn off any sprinklers that have been on overnight. Then I get busy doing nothing and before I know it husband is up and it's time for another coffee, a bit of a chat and soon it's too hot for me to be outside.

This morning though Husband says he'll help me get the extracting shed sorted. I have been asking for help for weeks now so had to go along with it even though it was getting too hot for me. Months ago daughter T helped me empty this shed, then we power washed it all and I then spent 4 days getting the floor painted. Another few days to put the shelves back in then some more time to get the table and the tubs of jars back in there. But the honey extractors were something that I couldn't get back in. I couldn't move them by myself and T has been unwell so didn't want to ask her. But now it is all put back together so we are ready for the long overdue extraction, whenever that may be.

The rest of the day I basically did nothing. Except I had a sleep for a bit in the afternoon. 'Cause 4:30 is too early you know. It was hot so we spent a few hours outside, me sitting in the shade and watching the birds and husband cleaning a barbecue we acquired yesterday. Son came out with his dogs for a bit and when he left I came in to make tea then decided to go into Vinnies and collect some rubbish as tomorrow is our bin day and there is so much down there. Then back on here until bedtime. Which will be soon.

Not a very productive day but a pretty good way to spend the first day of 2019. How did you spend the 1/1/2019?

I'll be going to bed soon and when I wake up it will be next year. How exciting is that!

2018 wasn't a bad year for us, in fact it was pretty darn good. We didn't do much, didn't go anywhere, didn't achieve much at all but we are all reasonably healthy and reasonably happy and that is enough.

Next year though, 2019, I'd like to do more, go places, achieve stuff...still be happy and healthy but just add that little bit extra to life. I wonder if we/I will.

I miss blogging and wonder why I don't. My memory isn't much chop any more and blogging was a way of being able to see what I did do, where I went...haha, maybe I did go exploring, had wonderful days out and achieved great things. Maybe I did it all but just don't remember because I didn't blog about it all. You think? haha. No, it didn't happen like that.

The gardens aren't doing much, chooks keep getting out and scratching them up. Grass keeps growing up and through them all. We still have too many slaters. I am still too lazy to get out there and fix it all. I'm still volunteering down at Vinnies. Still too scared to go on any adventures. And next year it may all stay the same but I think there will be a few changes, we'll see.

Now though, it's bedtime. How many reading will stay up to see the New Year in? How will you spend the 1st day of 2019? I hope you all have a great night and next year is good for you.

Snakes.Well it's still raining here, the cat is still staying inside where it is warm and the dog went home for a bit but then came back for a few days. He was here today, the yard is still ankle deep in water and he was still outside in the wet and cold.

I had a friend visit today and as she was leaving she says to me "is that a snake?" I doubted it, middle of Winter, cold, wet, not snake season...But yeah, it was, it was a small, 12inch maybe, tiger snake, laying on the wet grass on the driveway. And alive. With the dog sniffing around. I grabbed the dog, friend grabbed a shovel and snake was relocated.

Friend said there may be more around as they may be coming out of hiding places because of all the water and that does make sense. And there is so many hiding places as the grass is long and weedy as it hasn't been cut for a month or so because of the rain. But I never thought that we'd have to look out for snakes in this weather.

Dog was picked up this afternoon and has gone home for a bit. He will be back here sometime next week. I hope no more snakes come out.

As soon as we get some sun and the grass dries out enough I am going to be out there mowing it all down!

Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-33525481820019881252018-07-05T08:22:00.001+08:002018-07-05T08:22:19.534+08:00Raining. Cats and DogsIt's been raining, lots and lots of raining. Our yard is ankle deep in water. But hopefully all the dams in the area are filling up so there will be plenty of water come Summer.

And I am dog-sitting again and feel bad when it is cold and wet and he is outside. But he is an outside dog and I have been told by the owners not to let him in. He used to be able to come into the sunroom but then Billie came. Billie is a cat and Booker doesn't like cats. Well, Billie doesn't like dogs either and as the sunroom is now a part of Billies area...poor Booker. But last night there was thunder and lots and lots of rain so I locked the cat inside and put the dog in the sunroom. Today, the cat needs access to sunroom so dog will need to be outside. Where there is a back patio roof he can be under, on the mat where it is dry, or there are sheds he can go in. If he wants to, though I think I want him under cover more for me than him as he sleeps out in the weather a lot when he is here and his owners say he does the same up there.

Today, I'd rather be the cat, home and inside under cover where it is dry and warmish. Not the dog who is outside where it is wet and not warmish at all. But I won't be here, I am at Vinnies again. And I have no gas for a hot shower when I get home and the fire went out so I too will be cold when I get home. More like the dog than the cat. Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-58334422735998365462018-06-28T21:38:00.000+08:002018-06-28T21:38:01.282+08:00I Got Lazy.
Two more days and it will be July. That is half a year gone already and so far I have achieved precisely nothing in the backyard. I was picking capsicum and had heaps ready to pick but someone left a gate open. Again.

So since the sheep got into the backyard I don't have anything growing, nothing to pick anyway though the capsicum stalks that they ate all the leaves and fruit off may grow leaves back. Though it's been a few weeks now and they haven't yet.
And I say nothing but mean vegies. I have no vegies to eat. We do have oranges falling off the trees and there are a few chokos left on the vine but apart from that, nothing.

Husband has cabbages and caulies though so I will eat those when they are ready. Luckily I found the sheep before they had time to find those too or he might have been a bit cranky. He has set up his own garden beds towards the front of the yard as he was sick of *my* gardens being over run with grass and weeds. And his do look good and they were the only ones that fed us with cucumbers and tomatoes during Summer. Mind you, he does get out there and spend time working on them too, so maybe that is what I have to do. But, if I did have a fantastic vegie crop and the sheep ate it all I would have been a lot more upset with them and the person (me!) that left the gate open.

I am getting lazy, should say got, I have gotten lazy and it is much easier to go down the shop and buy stuff. I don't like not being able to go outside and pick what I want but evidently not enough to get out there and do something about it!

But I will, when it starts to get warmer and not so wet. Until then, I will be lazy.

Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-89052397363451125332018-06-22T12:28:00.002+08:002018-06-28T20:57:52.130+08:00Honey. Garlic. Unite! We have just made a batch of honey infused garlic. Or garlic infused honey...Not sure which but it smells great and after 20 minutes the honey already has a slight garlic taste. I need to leave it out for a few days then will keep it in the fridge and use it to ward off colds and other Winter ailments.

Picture to come. Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-28714648618791299242018-03-29T07:39:00.001+08:002018-06-25T21:47:50.138+08:00Oh Dear!Oh dear. Really?! 29th March and I haven't been here for months. I always intend too, but don't. But will...

I have been busy, not sure what with but I'm pretty sure it's been productive stuff. Or Facebook, I do waste too much time on FB now. And I am still volunteering at Vinnies and do seem to be there a lot more than my rostered 2 days. But I like it and it gets me off the computer.

We are now into Autumn, the heat is over for another year so I should be able to get outside more often. Though it is dark now when I get up, not that that has been the reason for the last 5 months...Hmm, maybe I am getting lazier in my old age.

I haven't much in the gardens, we have tomatoes, capsicums, pumpkins, chillies ready to be picked and eaten but not much else.

There are potatoes out there if we want to dig for them, sweet potatoes too.

Most fruit is finished but we now have Mangoes! Picked 6 fresh off the tree last week. The house smells of mango and they taste really mangoey, yep, that's now a word. This is our first year of getting these so pretty pleased about that. They are husbands trees, he wanted them, he bought them, he planted them, he picks them...Sadly, he doesn't eat them, not many anyway. He had 1 last week, then went away to work and has had none since. I have had 2, gave a couple to the daughter and have 3 left...hmmm, my maths is not working, maybe he picked more than 6. I am sure there will be more out there too so luckily family will be here over the weekend and they may like them.

I am due at Vinnies soon and have heaps to do before I leave, see, I am busy, so better get a move on. Hopefully I'll be back here in a day or two.Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-43347568288136111482017-12-05T16:46:00.001+08:002017-12-05T16:46:15.503+08:00December!! Really?! Bum!Hello.

Yep, December already. How did that happen?Barb.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11383714327462070532noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5847491402442204726.post-75349311522014164462017-08-01T23:12:00.000+08:002017-08-01T23:12:00.566+08:00Homemade Boot PolishWe have had a few wet days. Very wet. Husbands boots are wet, my boots were wet. I put them in front of the fire to dry out then gave them a clean and rubbed them over with shoe polish. The next day I wore them and they are wet again. What I needed was a protective coating, a beeswax coating but I have tried to rub straight beeswax on boots before and it was all too hard. haha See what I did there?!

I needed something to mix with the beeswax to keep it soft and rubinable so onto Google to see what others had to say about it all.

I found a recipe for boot polish, it looked simple and even though it was early and cold I decided to give it a go. Recipe said I needed beeswax. Yep, got that. And Olive oil. Ummm, no. No oil. But wait! Yes I do have oil. I had the remains of the 20 litres of old cooking oil that we collected from the café for treating Scaley leg mites on the chooks. Too manky too use? Not around here!

And because it has been so cold the inside fire was burning. Bonus.

I used the axe to chop a chunk of beeswax off the lump I had outside. Chopped it smaller as I only needed 2 tablespoons of the wax. Took a 1/2 cup measure and put water in the jar and marked it so I knew how much oil I needed. Outside to the chookpen and poured in the oil, back inside and put the jar of wax and oil into a pot of water on the stove.

Waited until the wax had melted, took pot off of the stove and put it onto the sink. Outside to let the chooks out and feed the sheep. Back inside only to find that the wax had hardened in the jar and was unpourable and the jar was too deep to get the wax out. Clever...not.

Put the pot and jar back on the stove to remelt the wax mixture, this time staying inside and having a hunt around for some tins to put the mixture in. I have more than a dozen of the tins that I wanted to use...somewhere....Finally found a couple, poured the melted wax into the tins and let it sit and set. Looks good and no manky oil smell so that's good.

I used a rag and rubbed the mixture into a boot. The left foot boot, the one on the right in the photo, is the boot I did first. The wax rubbed into the boot, making it look dark.

Put wax on the other boot, let it soak in a bit then rubbed both boots over with another rag. The boots are darker than before I used the polish but I haven't worn them outside yet so don't know if they are protected from the wetness of early morning grass. I will try them out soon and let you all know.

I haven't done husbands boots yet as he has been wearing them all day but I will try and get his done tomorrow before he puts them on and ask for his opinion tomorrow sometime. Not that he will have one. To him boots is boots, whether they are clean and shiny and waterproof or not.

But I had fun. I made me some bootpolish and it made me smile.

Maybe clean up the shed a bit. Maybe clean out the chookhouse. Maybe pick more oranges for the stall out the front. Maybe put away the stuff that I have been dumping on the table out the back...

Instead I worked on the tank gardens. There is not a lot growing in them anymore, thanks to chooks and roosters jumping out of the pens and scratching everything up. Not many plants but still lots of slaters. How does that work?! Why are the chooks scratching around and eating all the plants instead of scratching around and eating all the slaters. Stupid chooks.

The chokos are finished though. The vine is looking messy.
I ripped most of it down, fed some to the chooks, some to the sheep.

Some of the dead vine was put in the chookpen to try and stop me from slipping in the mud.

There aren't any more fruit worth eating, all are now old and tough and most are already starting to shoot ready to grow into new plants. The garden beds are full of these and some have already started to send down roots and get themselves established for next season. One or 2 didn't even wait to hit the dirt, they were growing as they were growing...

There are 4 tank gardens along here and although the choko vine was growing in only 1 the vine itself covered all four. I have pulled the vine down from over 3 tanks and will get to the last one during the week. Up the southern end though the choko is mixed up with a passionfruit vine so I will need to be careful pulling it down.

Once all the choko vine was removed from the fence above 2 tanks it was easier to see what was in the ground. I found a pineapple plant. This has been here a couple of years now and not doing much so will need some care to get it to fruit.

I cleared out the tank that had asparagus growing in it seeing as that was finished and the fronds were all yellow, brown or dead. I cut it all right down, threw on some smelly water from the comfrey bin and will maybe mulch it sometime during the week.
